Girija Prasad Koirala
Portraits (environmental and close-up) of Girija Prasad Koirala, who has played a central part in Nepali politics most of his life. In the 1950's and 60's, he was imprisoned several times for his political activism in the Nepal Congress party. His political career culminated in 1991 when he was elected Prime Minister. During the 1990s he led several governments through tumultuous years and amidst faction wars and charges of corruption. Following the people's uprising against the direct royal rule in April 2006, Mr. Koirala was again appointed Prime Minister, now at the age of 80. He led the interim coalition government and oversaw the peace agreement with the Maoist insurgents later that year.
